Annotation:

Poor management of waste is still one of the acute problems in Georgia. Waste is still one of the major sources of pollution of air, soil, surface and underground waters. Disorder of waste collection system represents a major reason of environmental pollution from spontaneous dump sites. Our country has not yet established a waste management policy and legislation at the national level. There is no comprehensive information on annually generated and accumulated waste on the territory of the country, types, processing/recycling, and treatment. Accordingly, there is no statistical data in this field by years. The given study includes problems of waste management in Georgia and best practice examples (Sweden experience). The study also includes information on Geo-data Base on illegal dumpsites. The Geo-data Base is under the development for the moment and includes: location, description of the site (approximate area and number of waste) and results of measurements of soil, air and water contamination. The given product is implemented by NGO EcoVision under the Clean up Georgia Project financed by Embassy of Sweden in Tbilisi.
